The eastern Kentucky State city of Prestonburg, with a population of just 3,300, is the county seat of Floyd County. The city is named after John Preston, or more likely his wife who owned a 100,000 acre estate on which the town was laid out in 1797. However, it was not named Prestonburg until 1820. The Thunder Ridge raceway was located in Prestonburg, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, holding its inaugural meeting on 3rd July 1994. The 4 furlong oval track had a 134 metre home straight, offering a programme of harness racing for over 21 years. In October 2017 the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission noted the surrender of Thunder Rides license to hold racing, and no meetings were staged in 2018.
